Location of the Temple :

The Greatness of Annai Adhi Parasakthi who rules of the whole Universe, is abundant, she has several temples under several names. One such temple is Arulmige Ellaiamman Temple, Vettuvanam. It is situated in Vellore District, a part of Tamilnadu.


Arulmighu Ellaiamman Temple is located on Vellore, Ambur, Vaniyambadi, Thiruppathur Highways (Chennai - Bangalore Highways) at a distance of 23 km from Vellore. Situated on the slopes of Javvadhu Hills and on the banks of River Palar, it is said that Arulmighu Ellaiamman of Vettuvanam and Padavedu Ellaiamman are the same.

Discription of the Name ;

Melaivithur and Vithagapuri are the other names of Vettuvanam. Vettuvanam, Govindampadi, Pettai are separate villages in the British period. Afterthat all these 3 villages are brought in single village administration.

Since the Forts are there and the name was Pettaitheru, The king of Padavedu also called Kundalipuram is Nannan, In his kingdom this place might be border of his period. There is two rivers started in Javvadhu Hills, in which one is passing thro" Padavedu Village as Kamandala river and another passing thro" Vettuvanam as "Punniya Theertha Nadhi".

History of the place :
Lord Siva and Lordess Parvathaidevi incarnated as the great Saint Jamadhgani and his wife Renukadevi and lived on this world. Visu, Viswas,
Viswarupan, Paramjothi and Parasuraman were their five sons. Parasuram was their last son.

It was a daily duty for Renukadevi to make a pot out of fresh mud and fetch water for Saint Jamadhgani's Pooja. One day, she saw the reflection of a Kandharva of the water. She stood mesimerised by his beauty for a split of a second. The mud pot dissolved in the river. She tried again and again but invain. She realised her mistake and told her husband that an animal chased her and so she coulkd'nt bring water. But the saint who guessed the real happenings, called out for his first four sons and asked them to cut off their mother's head. They all refused and saint cursed and asked them to cut off their mother's head. They all refused and saind cursed them and called his last son Parasuram to do the duty. Parasuram asked for twa boons from his mother Renukadevi to the forest to chop off her head, He chased her mother who ran for life and she hid behind a Arundathi girl, Who was cutting woods and begged for mercy. Parasuram warned the girl, but she did not oblige. In the heights of anger Parasuram chopped boht heads togather.

          In great distress, he took the heads to his father. According to his granted boons. he brought his brother and mother back to life. But in confussion, he fixed his mothers head on the Arundathi girl body. Henceforth the deity was named Mariamman and the place Vettuvanam. A farmer who cultivated the land accidentally dropped the spade on the deity. Biood poured out like a river. A divine voice from the sky said " I am Ellaiamman" and a temple was constructed in the place. Though the time and year cannot be judged precisely, it said that in 1961, this temple was one among the 2500 temples in Tamil Nadu.

Divine Tree:
                   Neem is considered the devotional tree of this place. It is 100 years old. Devotees suffering from small pox, Measles used to rub the paste Neem leaf and turmeric on their whole day.

          Devotees who are childrens tie cradles around the tree their wish as fulfilled. Unmarried devotees tie the sacred yellow thread around the tree and wish for suitable life partners.

Deitees:
                   Mostly all the deitees in this temple are east facing but some are west facing. In this temple, the Goddess is facing the east. There is a big mandapam of a seating capacity of 100 persons. 'Utsav' statue of Goddess is situated there. To its right the snake Goddess is situated. The five headed snake Goddess grants all the wishes of the devotees.

Sacred Water:
                   To the right of the temple, a well is situated. It never dries in the toughest of the summer season. A pond is situated just opposited to the temple. Strong stone steps are bordering the pond onall four sides. These are more secured by strong iron gates on all four sides. Every year "Float festival" is been celebrated for three days. Devotees from nearby and far off places visit the temple on these days and enjoy the dreaded diseases disappear while you bath in the pond.

Gopuram :
           (Raja Gopuram) is east facing. It has Seven Kalasam on top. Historical happenings of this temple are depicted as statue on the main gopuram. Even an ordinary illiterate can understand from this statue. Epics like Ramayana, Sivapurnam are depicted in a simple but beautiful manner. There is a smaller Gopuram, which is five coloured. It has three kalasas.

Stone depictions :
            Year 1981          -     Compound wall was constructed.
            Year 1972          -     Mandapam was constructed.
            Year 1973          -     Snake Goddess Mandapam was constructed.
            Year 1984-1988   -      Kumbabishekam was performed.
            Year 2003          -      Kumbabishekam was performed again.
Specialities :
         Arulmighu Uttararanganathar Temple, Pallikonda is situated at 2km from here. It was constructed in the 12th Century. Here the deity is in a lying posture. Arulmighu Uttararanganathar along with Sridevi and Boodhevi shower their blessings on the devotees. Vaikunta Ekadesi festival, Vaikunda Vaazhal are the most famous festival of this place.

         At a distance of 3 km from here, Arulmighu Chelliamman temple is situated in the height of western ghats. At its foothills, Chamundeeswari Amman temple is situated. It is said that Chammundeeswari and Ellaiamman were close friends.

         In the northern direction of this temple, Arulmighu Anandhavalli Sundareswarar temple is situated. Naganatheswarar temple is located in Keezhachur Village. Pinthayar temple is located in Vettuvanam Pettai.

Poojas and Festivals :
         In this temple, Poojas are performed twice daily.
         1. Kalasanthi Pooja (Morning)
         2. Sayaratchai Pooja
         "Adiperuvizha" is famous here. In tamil month "Adi upto 7 Fridays & 10 days Brammhotsav are celebrated in big level. In all 10 days of Bramhotsav Lord Amman is decorated daily in different models and bring the Lord inb Chariot to all streets. In these fridays, 4th Friday - Car Festival, 5th Friday - Theppal (Floating), 6th Friday Lakshadeep, aii these are celebrated very well every year. Navarathri Festivals also celebrated here with all aine days decorated with different posture.

        They are doing special Abishekam and Aradhan in Deepavali and Pongal days
